The Noco GB 40 is the best available jumpstarter. And for good reason.
It has a large battery and enough power to start most vehicles up to 1000Amps.
But it is not the most expensive battery jumper available, far from it. It comes in at a very reasonable price.
It is not the most powerful jump starter available but should start most engines with ease.
And if you need maximum power the NOCO Boost X GBX155 4250A 12V UltraSafe Portable Lithium Jump Starter is available for around triple the price. With an amperage of 4250A that will start any 12V.
But I digress. The GB 40 is by far the most popular jumpstarter currently available. And judging by our criteria (see buyer’s guide) it hits most of its objectives.
One of the most important metrics is build quality. Nobody wants their buy to crack or break if dropped or bashed about. On that score, the GB40 is great. It weighs in at a little over two pounds but the weight that it does have feels solid rather than cumbersome. It is sturdy and built like a tank. It feels as though, to break it, you would have to make a special effort.
For safety, the GB40 has a reverse polarity alarm. It also uses ‘anti-spark technology’ to ensure you are in no danger.
Our main criticism is that this is a jumpstarter and power bank only. But that is not a criticism of the GB40 per se. It just reflects our passion for bundled tools. So, I like my jumpstarter to have an integral air compressor and even an AC output, which this does not.
Having said that, it does fulfill several other functions. It includes an integral 100-lumen flashlight with 7 brightness settings. This includes an emergency SOS mode. And so you can keep your devices juiced up, it has a USB port.
Other than that, we would like to see the cables being a higher gauge than the AWG 6, but that is a minor consideration. The jumper can jump gas engines up to 6 liters and diesel up to 3 liters. And not just cars. It is also useful for SUVs, trucks, RVs, boats and even lawnmowers. We particularly like the BOOST function, for more depleted batteries.
It does not come with a wall plug AC charger though. Rather, you will need to make do with a USB charger, as you might do with your cellphone. You can see why, though. NOCO distributes globally, and there are a lot of different wall socket styles.
It does come with a one-year limited warranty. So you are covered for that period against manufacturing defects.
But, users report the unit lasting more than six years with only a handful of charges. But even if it lasts five years it is a good deal. We recommend checking the charge on your unit at least every 3 months.

It has a stylish design and looks sleek and cool. And it meets a lot of the criteria for an excellent jumpstarter.
Safety is the most important thing, and the NEXPOW is almost foolproof. Its range of safety features cover you in several scenarios. These include reverse polarity, reverse connection, spark proof, overload, over-voltage, overcharge, over-discharge and short circuit. So it protects you against accidental battery or vehicle damage.
In terms of build quality, it is lightweight but feels robust. So not easy to break.
And speaking of breakages, it is always good when manufacturers exceed expectations. And NEXPOW has done that with the inclusion more than a year’s warranty. Mine came with a card asking me to register for an extended two-year warranty online.
The batteries that we tested the NEXPOW on started with no bother at all. Which is exactly what we would expect to happen.
And taking only 6 hours to reach full power, that charge will stay in the unit for up to three months. So you get 3 months’ peace of mind before recharge.
Much like the NOCO GB 40, this charger performs other interesting functions. Aside from the mandatory “power bank” settings, it also has a powerful flashlight built in. This has several modes, including SOS if you ever run into difficulty in a boat.
A minor gripe, but this charger could have benefitted from a rubberized casing or wrap. This would reduce the chance of the charger slipping and sliding on your engine while in use.
It also has (presumably) a safety feature whereby if you connect it to your battery it will revert to standby mode after several seconds. This means that you need to be quick to get around to the ignition and start the engine before it switches off.

DeWalt is the Rolls Royce of equipment manufacturers. And it is not without reason that the DXAEPS14 is so popular.
First of all, it looks the business. It is sleek and stylish with DeWalt’s trademark yellow and black styling.
But you cannot go on looks alone, and luckily the DXAEPS14 doesn’t need to.
At the time of writing, this charger is at a reasonably high price point, but not the most expensive on the list. For your money, you get a great all-rounder. Its excellent build quality makes it a robust performer that will survive hits and knocks in harsh environments.
It is a multi-faceted tool that solves several problems at once. For not only does it incorporate a battery jump starter and air compressor but it also acts as a portable power station. So, if you are considering a camping trip or other excursion, this device is ideal for charging your devices off-grid.
And perhaps more importantly, it will also run an AC current up to 500 Watts. So, if you are pretty handy with the power tools, you can use it to run drills and saws, etc., even where there is no AC power source.
It packs a punch. With 1600 peak amperage it is at the more powerful end of our range. It has enough power and quality to start light or medium-sized vehicles without a problem.
But at the same time, it is available at a reasonable mid-range price. So it possesses both affordability and quality without veering into the realms of more pricey commercial grade jump starters.

This is another quality jump starter. It boasts a lot of the features you might expect from a modern jump starter. As well as the jumper it also has an air compressor and a built-in charger,
The air compressor has 100PSI pressure and an automatic digital gauge. You can closely monitor your tire’s pressure as you check and inflate them. It is programmable and simple to use. It shuts down automatically when the tire reaches the desired pressure.
This jump starter itself has a 1150 Amp peak current to jump-start your battery. It also doubles as a power bank for your devices, with 54 hours of 12-V DC current from 2 USB ports. No AC current from this one, though.
The build quality of its cables and clamps is top-notch. But this is only what we would expect from a Die Hard product.
This jump starter also has many safety features. We also like its replaceable lead acid battery. So, if your battery eventually dies, no need to invest in an entirely new unit. Just contact Die Hard and order the appropriate battery to swap them out.

JF.EGWO is not as widely known as some of the other brands we looked at. However, it provides excellent portability. This is combined with a punch that will be more than enough to satisfy the occasional user.
It’s another jump starter with a built-in air compressor to inflate tires. So an air compressor and battery number in one saves you needing separate devices.
This was one of our favorites. It is absolutely superb for those with moderate power requirements and limited space. It only missed out on being our top pick because some of the others are more powerful. It depends on what you need.
It has a 20000mAh rechargeable lithium polymer battery to give a long backup time. It has the capacity to jump-start a gas or a diesel engine 20 times on a single charge.

And customer satisfaction is positive. However, there are some reports of some units failing between 1 and 2 years – once out of the warranty period, unfortunately. This is an obviously infrequent occurrence but is something to prick your ears up.

Trickle chargers differ to jump starters. They are often wall mounted and connected to an external power source. For instance the mains power of your property or garage.
They do not provide a jolt to the battery. Instead, they charge the battery for a longer period and maintain a high level of charge. This is gentler and more gradual.
These are best used overnight during winter to keep the vehicle battery charged and ready.
Considerations when choosing your Jump Starter
Selecting a jump starter can seem overwhelming due to the range of options available.
This is what you should look for.
How much starting power that your battery needs is influenced by a few factors
Unsurprisingly, the key factor in determining how many starting amps your engine needs is its size. A tiny city runaround needs a fraction of the power needed by an articulated behemoth.
A good rule of thumb is that 400-600 Amps will start most domestic passenger vehicles with no problem, and most likely the smaller and more compact SUVs and trucks also.
In reality, depending on other factors, a small, compact vehicle may require no more than 150Amps to turn over.
Then you are raising it. Larger commercial vehicles are likely to require in excess of 1000Amps to turn over. Sometimes up to 2000Amps for larger industrial or agricultural vehicles such as tractors or combine harvesters.
Many of the largest vehicles use a 24Volt battery setup. Typically this will consist of two 12Volt batteries rigged in series. You cannot jump these with a 12Volt charger.
It is an unfortunate fact that no battery lasts forever. Sulfation will put paid to them usually after around 4-5 years. You may be able to start some and keep them going for a while. But once your battery gets past the point of no return, a replacement is advisable
Your engine oil performs a crucial role in keeping your engine in finely lubricated working order. However, the viscosity of the oil used for different engines can vary significantly. This makes a difference to the amount of power required to start the engine. The thicker the oil, the more internal resistance there is to the moving parts of the engine. These parts, therefore, require more power from the battery to “push” them into action.
This is a big one. The power required to start an engine in warm weather is significantly less that that required in frigid winter climates.
This comes back to the viscosity of the engine oil, which we mentioned before. Simply, cold oil is thicker in consistency than warmer oil.
Batteries also discharge more rapidly in cold conditions. This is a double whammy meaning that more power is needed for the jump. This is measured in Cold Cranking Amps and is higher than the normal Cranking Amps (CA) measurement.
Diesel Vs Petrol Engines
Diesel engines require more amps to start than normal gasoline engines. This is due to the fact that diesel engines have a substantially higher compression ratio. This increases the load on the starter motor.
This particularly affects agricultural and industrial vehicles, which oftentimes run with diesel engines.

The first and the most important feature that you should look for in a jumpstarter is the starting power or Peak Amps. This can only be sustained for a very short period, usually around 5-15 seconds.
This means the voltage power needed to jump-start the engine.
There are two different kinds of ratings used to find the best charger. Some chargers rank by cold cranking amperes (CCA) while others rank by peak amperes (PA).
The jump starter with greater amperes is good to use. This is because not all chargers can start all engines. But it depends on what type of vehicle you are likely to need to start.
Rather, large engines need heavy voltage jump starters and small engines need less.
Usually, jump starters designed for small engines need 150CCA and the jump starters designed for big engines need 450CCA.
Please remember that not all batteries need the same charging power, even if they are the same make or model.
The dead and worn batteries often need more CCA to revive, while the good batteries need less voltage.

Next up are safety features. Remember we are dealing with electricity and want to be as safe as possible.
