Manufacturer

A generator manufacturer can make or break your trust in your generator. And knowing the standards the company produces can influence your decision. And rightly so.

Honda-produced generators have been around since 1973. And the company has more than 40 million happy customers,

It designs its engines to be as fuel efficient as possible. It also strives to be sustainable and releases an annual sustainability report.

Yamaha has also been producing generators since 1973. This has allowed them plenty of time to perfect their 4-stroke engines. Yamaha complies with Japan’s emissions regulations as it also strives for sustainability.

Both produce quality generators that are great for traveling and easy to transport. There is no clear winner between these brands.

VERDICT: TIE

Power Output

The power output of an inverter generator is a crucial consideration. If it is less than you need, you may be better off with a bigger generator. Or you can buy two to meet your needs.

The Honda’s AC output is approximately 2200 watts, and the Maximum AC current is around 18.3 Amps at 120 Volts. The optional “eco-mode” allows the generator to output only the amount of power you need at the time.

The Yamaha’s AC output is also 2200 watts with a rated output of 1800 watts. Its Maximum AC current is also around 15 to 18.3 amps at 120 volts. Also, the built-in smart throttle senses the load needed and adjusts the throttle to suit.

Both of these generators have the same power output. However, the optional “eco-mode” of the Honda generator may be better than the built-in smart throttle for those who prefer having complete control of their generator and the amount of power output.

Here’s a look at some of the common appliances used outdoors and some of their wattages. Remember, this is a guideline and will vary depending on the brand of appliance and some other factors.

WINNER: HONDA

Engine

The engine power contributes to the reliability of the generator. As a rule of thumb, higher CC generators are often more reliable.

The Honda EU2200i runs a 4-stroke, single-cylinder engine. It has an impressive engine displacement of 121 CC. Pretty powerful. This engine is more than capable of supplying you with a constant and reliable power source.

The Yamaha EF2200iS also holds a single-cylinder, 4-stroke engine. But the engine displacement is only 79 CC. This is more than enough for most users but lower than the Honda.

Though these engines aren’t too different, the engine displacement, the CC measurements above, shows a gap between the Yamaha and Honda engines, making the Honda EU2200i the winner since it is more likely to provide a steady and reliable power output.

WINNER: HONDA

Noise

If you want a quiet break away or need a generator for an event, noise can be a significant consideration. These generators’ noise levels are measured at both ¼ loads and rated loads, and from a set distance of 23 feet away, following the ISO 9614-2 recommendations.

The Honda inverter generator emits a mere 47 dB (A) at ¼ load. And the rated load produces around 57 dB (A), which is very quiet.

The Yamaha inverter generator also boasts relatively quiet numbers. Its ¼ load produces 57 dB (A). And the rated load makes a noise measured at 65 dB (A). To help you understand how little noise this is, normal talking ranges between 50 and 65 dB (A).

Though both inverter generators are quiet, the clear winner is the Honda EU2200i. The Honda’s maximum noise is similar to the Yahama’s minimum.

Common DeciBels Sounds

WINNER: HONDA

Fuel Capacity And Run time At 1/4 load

When choosing a generator, capacity and run time are two things you need to consider. No one likes having to refill their generator too often.

The Honda inverter generator has a fuel tank capacity of 0.95 gallons, which is relatively small. But at ¼ load, this generator can still run for up to 8.1 hours with only 0.95 gallons of fuel. The rated load measurements for this generator have a run time of around 3.2 hours.

The Yamaha generator has a better fuel tank capacity of around 1.24 gallons. At ¼ load, the Yamaha generator can run for up to 10.5 hours on the 1.24 gallons of gas it can hold.

The winner of the run time and tank capacity category is the Yamaha EF2200iS inverter generator. It has a larger fuel tank and a longer run time.

WINNER: YAMAHA

Starting Method

We’ve all gotten an achy arm from trying to start a stubborn pull-start generator. So while the starting method may not be a deal breaker, you should consider it before you choose.

The Honda inverter generator uses a manual recoil system to start. You will also need to handle a couple of different switches to ensure the fuel line is open. These include the choke on or off, and a couple of other things.

The Yamaha inverter generator also uses a manual recoil system. But it also has the addition of a “smart dial” control, which controls both the ignition and fuel petcock.

Though both use a manual recoil system to start, the Yamaha uses superior tech to make it more manageable. That is why the Yamaha EF2200iS is the winner.

WINNER: YAMAHA

Dimension and Weight

If you’re traveling, the weight and dimensions of a generator can make a big difference. So it is a good idea to pay attention to the weight and dimensions of these two generators.

The Honda is compact, measuring 20 x 16 x 11 inches. It is also light, weighing only 46.5 pounds.

The Yamaha inverter generator is also compact, measuring 21.9 x 11.8 x 18.5 inches but weighing 55.2 pounds.

The Honda EU2200i is the winner if you want a smaller and lighter inverter generator.

WINNER: HONDA

Outlets and Control Panel

A generator’s outlets and control panel can make all the difference. If you can’t see what you are doing at night, or don’t have enough of the right outlets, it can frustrate.

The Honda generator has a GFCI outlet and some LED indicators, so you see the important details at night. It also has an excellent Bluetooth app that allows you to watch your generator, even at night.

On the other hand, the Yamaha generator features an RV outlet, making it easy to use if you’re an RV enthusiast. It also has LED illumination of the entire control panel to keep everything visible.

I like the outlets and illumination of the Yamaha. But the Honda’s Bluetooth app is unparalleled. And this makes the Honda the clear winner.

WINNER: HONDA

Warranty

If a generator doesn’t work the way it should, it is good to know you have a warranty instead of buying a new one. A warranty can provide you with some peace of mind.

The Honda generator comes with a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty. If something outside of your control goes wrong, you can likely get it repaired or replaced.

The Yamaha generator also comes with a 3-year limited warranty, which is great for peace of mind.

Since both generators have 3-year warranties, they tie for this round.

WINNER: TIE

Portability or Wheel Kit

Knowing that you can move your generator without a team of people to help is a big consideration.

The Honda generator has no wheels. But with its lightweight build and thick handle on the top, it is easy enough for one person to move.

Though heavier, the Yamaha generator has a handle design that makes it easy to carry as a single person or pair.

With the innovative handle design increasing portability, the Yamaha generator wins this round.

WINNER: YAMAHA

Price

Though all specifications of a generator are important, the price can be essential. After all, you cannot buy something if you do not have the funds.

The Honda generator has a price of around 1199,00 USD at the time of writing.

The Yamaha generator, on Amazon, has a price of around 1150.00 USD. It is a little more affordable than the Honda, though this price may also vary. Check the links on this page for up-to-date prices.

If you are looking for a more affordable generator, the Yamaha EF2200iS is the winner.

WINNER: YAMAHA

The Best Overall. Considering all of the aspects we have delved into above, the Honda EU2200i is the best overall. With a quieter engine, Bluetooth app and manageable weight, It’s worth an extra 50 dollars.

The Best For Low Noise. If you’re looking for an inverter generator that makes as little noise as possible, the Honda wins. The Honda is considerably quieter than the Yamaha.

The Best For Run-time and Tank Capacity. If you want the ease of use and peace of mind that only a big tank and extended run-time can give, the Yamaha is perfect. It can last up to two hours more than the Honda.

The Best For Portability. Since no one enjoys moving a generator, the Yamaha is likely to make your life easier. Though it has no wheels, the handle design allows you to carry it by yourself or with the help of another person.

If you need to operate the generator in the rain, use a cover. These can be purchased especially for the job.

Alternatively, you can improvise your own bespoke cover using something like an upturned plastic bin or wooden crate. If you do this, always ensure you fashion vents in the sides to ensure that air can flow through unhindered.
