Highest Cold Cranking Amps Battery

If you reside in a place that has a cold climate or generally experiences fluctuating weather, then the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) rating of your vehicle’s battery is of crucial importance.

The starting power of an average battery diminishes with time. Thus, an effective and durable battery with higher starting power can ensure your vehicle’s active performance for a longer period of time – whatever the weather.

The Cold Cranking Amps rating is an essential consideration when choosing a battery that will function in extremely cold weather, and will insulate against the possibility of dysfunction due to lower temperatures.

What are Cold Cranking Amps?

Cold Cranking Amps are the number of amperes a lead-acid battery at -18 degrees C (0 degrees F) can deliver for 30 seconds, whilst maintaining a voltage of a minimum of 1.2 volts per cell (for a 12-volt battery this is 7.2 volts). To put it another way, how much power your battery can deliver to start your vehicle in freezing temperatures.

CCA measurement

Different variants of battery testers have emerged in the market to read the CCA ratings of a battery. Most testers check a starter battery by reading the Cold Cranking Amp.

CCA relates to battery resistance that impacts engine cranking and it confirms if the battery’s capacity is sufficient to crank the engine.

The CCA usually remains high, while the capacity constantly falls with increasing age of the battery. There are plenty of CCA reading machines available that read the capacity of the battery in a power start test.

Conventional Method

Charge your battery completely, and freeze it to -18 degrees C (0 degrees F) for 24 hours. Apply a discharged current when the battery is at a subfreezing temperature. To pass the CCA test, the voltage must remain above 7.2V for about 30 seconds. In such a state, the battery can be considered as efficient during cold weather.

CCA Tester

Most of the CCA testers these days are digital which makes the testing process much more flexible. All you have to do is just connect the CCA tester with the battery, select the battery type and enter the CCA ratings. The display pad of the tester will reveal the result if the battery endures 7.2V for 30 seconds or more. Make sure that your battery has a minimal charge of 40% before the test.

Highest Cold Cranking Amps Battery – the Verdict

CCA ratings are never completely accurate but rather an estimate provided by the manufacturer. Never use a battery with a CCA lower than the manufacturer’s recommendation.

A battery with higher CCA maximizes the starting power which is essential in extremely cold weather.

Lower CCA ratings can pose a serious threat to the battery life and its performance. Therefore, always choose a battery with a high Cold Cranking Amps rating. This should fulfil the electrical requirements of older vehicles without adversely affecting its electric system.
