I tested and reviewed FIVE generators made by Firman Power Equipment. And I can now announce that the Firman P03607 generator is the best all-around generator.

However, picking the right generator for the right occasion can take time. That’s why I conducted this Firman Generator Review, so you don’t have to.

I have to say that I wasn’t overly keen on Firman generators before I started my review. I was only vaguely aware of the brand before, and I wasn’t sure about the quality of the products. Having been set up in 1999 it wasn’t prominent in my consciousness in the same way that Honda, Yamaha and Generac are. But my opinion has changed completely after testing these five generators.

Firman generators have a great design and are built to last. And the team at Firman has done a great job at providing a generator for every occasion.

The Firman P03607 is perfect for camping when you want power at a remote location. It can run most of the appliances in your house and has a great run time. You may want to use it for an RV or emergency power during an outage. That is all possible with the P03607.

The P03607 might be the top generator on this list, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the most suitable for you.

Every generator on this list is perfect for a specific situation or project.

So, in this Firman generator review, I’m going to give you an overview of the five generators that I tested. And I’ll also tell you which one is the best Firman generator for you.

And it is so easy to start that anyone can do it, despite it being a recoil start.

In terms of things we didn’t like so much, the Firman P03607 weighs in at a hefty 102 pounds. That is pretty heavy and doesn’t come with wheels. So if you think you will be moving this generator around a lot, buying a wheel kit will make it easier to move around. Depending on which wheel kit you buy, it will cost around $70 – $110, but it is well worth the price.

ADVANTAGES

  • Useful in most scenarios
  • It is easy enough for anyone to use
  • It has an excellent run-time, so there is no need to worry about it dying too soon
  • Good Wattage, making it possible to run most appliances
  • You can easily install a wheel kit to make it easier to move around

DISADVANTAGES

  • A little on the expensive side
  • It is quite heavy, making it uncomfortable to move without wheels
  • It does not come with wheels

2. The P01201 Is Best For People On The Go

Specifications

  • Manufacturer: Firman
  • Starting Watts: 1500 Watts
  • Running Watts: 1200 Watts
  • Fuel Type: Gasoline
  • Warranty: 3 years
  • Starter Method: Recoil
  • Run Time: 10 Hours @ ½ load
  • Weight: 54 pounds
  • Tank Capacity: 1.7 Gallons
  • Frequency: 60Hz
  • Decibels: 74 dB at 7m and 75% load.
  • Ports: 1 x 5-20R 120V 20A DUPLEX

The P01201 is a solid generator ideal for camping, tailgating at a game, or recreational use. With its 1.7-gallon tank, the P01201 generator has a run time of up to 12 hours.

Although the Firman P01201 has some great benefits, it also has some downsides. First, it has a lower power output compared to the other generators on our list. And second, like the P03607, it does not come with wheels. But given its relatively light weight, this isn’t a huge problem.

ADVANTAGES

  • This generator is very light compared to some of the other ones
  • Just like the first generator we talked about, this one also has an excellent run-time
  • It is great for outdoor uses that don’t require a tremendous amount of power
  • It is relatively small, so it is easy to store when not in use
  • The price is not bad for what it provides

DISADVANTAGES

  • It does not provide a lot of power
  • It is a bit noisy for its size

3. The W03083 Is Best For A Quiet And Reliable Power Source

Specifications

  • Manufacturer: Firman
  • Starting Watts: 3300 Watts
  • Running Watts: 3000 Watts
  • Fuel Type: Gasoline
  • Warranty: 3 years
  • Starter Method: Recoil
  • Run Time: 9 Hours @ ¼ load
  • Weight: 109 pounds
  • Tank Capacity: 1.8 Gallons
  • Frequency: 60Hz
  • Decibels: 58db ¼ load
  • Power outlets: 1 x 5-20R 120V 20A Duplex, 1 x TT-30R 120V 30A RV, 1 x USB Outlet(5V 2.1A), Australia Receptacle 10A 250VAC – 1×2 prong angled, DC Outlet 12V/TYPE – 1×2 prong angled
FIRMAN w03083
Firman w03083

When considering its size and output, the W03083 is on the pricey side, but it makes up for it with its array of features. For example, the generator can run for 9 hours on a single fill of its 1.8-gallon fuel tank, which is pretty decent. And besides, it is not only portable but also very sturdy, thanks to its wheels and “tuff-stuff” handle.

The W03083 is simple to operate and includes a remote start feature. This feature isn’t very common for generators but it is usefulness is undeniable. You can start it at a range of 168 feet using its remote start. And you can start it using its recoil as well, so multiple options, depending on circumstances.

It also makes only around 58 decibels of noise when running. So it is one of the quietest I looked at, well below the National Parks Service’s limits.

Being able to use it as a portable generator makes it great for camping, tailgating, and other outdoor activities. It won’t last forever, but it’s an excellent lightweight camping option. It is more expensive than most of the generators on this list. Still, it is also better suited than others to the role of a lightweight, portable generator.

ADVANTAGES

  • It provides enough power to be useful in most situations
  • It has an excellent run-time like the other generators we talked about
  • It comes with wheels
  • It is much quieter than the other generators we cover in this article
  • It can be started remotely from up to 168 feet away

DISADVANTAGES

  • The price is relatively high

4. The H08051 Is Best For Large Power/Backup Power Needs

Specifications

  • Manufacturer: Firman
  • Starting Watts: 10000 Watts
  • Running Watts: 8000 Watts
  • Fuel Type: Dual Fuel – Gas & propane
  • Warranty: 3 years
  • Starter Method: Electric
  • Run Time: 12 Hours @ ½ load
  • Weight: 212 pounds
  • Tank Capacity: 8 Gallons
  • Frequency: 60Hz
  • Decibels: 74dB ¼ load
  • Ports: 1 x 5-20R 120V 20A Duplex GFCI, 1 x L5-30R 120V 30A Twist Locktwist Lock, 1 x L14-30R 120V/240V 30A Twist Lock, 1 x 14-50R 120V/240V 50A

The Firman H08051 is the most expensive generator I looked at, but it’s also the most powerful. This generator is not intended for a backyard workstation or to go camping due to its weight of 212 pounds. Thankfully it has wheels to make transportation to the site easier.

The H08051’s most impressive feature is its ability to generate an incredible 8,000 Watts of power. That is well above the output of the other Firmans on this list. Besides, the 8-gallon fuel tank allows it to run for approximately 12 hours. Thanks to its hybrid carburetor, the best part is that it can run on regular gas or propane.

This generator is ideal for emergency use, on a farm or ranch, in a large recreational vehicle, or on a bus. The H08051 includes an LPG regulator with a hose holder, an engine oil bottle, an oil funnel, and a spark plug wrench. So you’re going to be fully equipped to get this monster going.

It’s fair to say that this is not the quietest on our list, but with its gargantuan power output that is to be expected. But apart from that, there are no real downsides to this generator.

ADVANTAGES

  • It provides a lot of power, making it great for any project or problem
  • It has an excellent run-time like the others
  • It is a dual-fuel generator which means it can run on both gas and propane
  • Good value for money, considering the power
  • Electric start means that getting it going is hassle-free

DISADVANTAGES

  • Quite expensive

5. The P01001 Is Best For Small Power Needs

Specifications

  • Manufacturer: Firman
  • Starting Watts: 1300 Watts
  • Running Watts: 1050 Watts
  • Fuel Type: Duel Fuel- Gas & Propane
  • Warranty: 3 years
  • Starter Method: Recoil
  • Run Time: 10 Hours @ ½ load
  • Weight: 46 pounds
  • Tank Capacity: 1.3 Gallons
  • Frequency: 60Hz
  • Decibels: 62 dB at 50% load.

The P01001 might be the smallest generator on the list, but that doesn’t make it bad. It depends on your needs and requirements. On the contrary, the P01001 is perfect for low-power needs. So these include tailgating, camping, picnics, or even running small appliances in emergencies.

Firman P01001

It has a modest 1.3-gallon tank which allows it to run for up to 10 hours. Although it is a bit noisy for its size, I like this generator a lot.

ADVANTAGES

  • It provides a decent amount of power for its size
  • It has an excellent run-time like the others
  • It is very light and easy to move
  • It can run on both gas and propane
  • Its price is perfect for people who want a generator but don’t want to buy something bigger

DISADVANTAGES

  • It is loud for its size
  • Only one power outlet

Portable Generators Buyers Guide

There are several things to consider when buying a portable generator. Doing so will help you to find the best generator to fit your needs.

Here are some of the things to consider.

How to choose a generator

A generator is a great addition to any home in the case of an unforeseen power outage. It may also be useful for home improvement projects, camping trips, and more. But with so many different types of portable generators on the market, how do you know which one is right for you?

Here are some things to consider

Inverter or Conventional

Inverter generators have an advantage over conventional generators. They are smaller and lighter and run more quietly. Conventional generators are less expensive and are for tasks that need more power. These might include running industrial or farm equipment involving large appliances. An inverter generator will adjust its output depending on the load being placed on it. A conventional generator will run at a constant speed. So while a conventional generator is cheaper to buy, an inverter will save money on fuel.

Fuel Type

Gasoline and propane are the most common types of fuel for portable generators. Gasoline is less expensive and is easier to find, but it is also more volatile and has a shorter shelf life. Propane is more expensive and harder to find, but it is more stable and has a longer shelf life. That said, dual-fuel generators are handy. This is because if there is a shortage of gasoline you have an alternative.

Portability

Portability is an important consideration. Generally, the more power your generator produces, the larger and heavier it will be. Some generators come with built-in handles and wheels to make them easier to move. Others will require you to buy these items separately. If you need a generator for basic appliances, you will most likely only need a smaller and lighter model. If you need to power heavier appliances or tools, a larger and heavier model will be necessary.

Wheel Kit

If you plan to move your generator around a lot, you may want to consider a model that comes with a wheel kit. This will make it easier to transport your generator from one location to another. If the generator you are considering does not come with a wheel kit, you can often buy one separately.

Noise Level

Input this one into your “pros” and “cons” list. If you live in a quiet neighborhood, you will definitely want a quieter generator. If you are using your generator for work or camping, the noise level may be less of a concern. But remember that your camping neighbors may take umbrage and smack you in the chops if it is too noisy. Choose an inverter generator. This will adjust its output depending on its load. So if you have fewer things running at once, your generator will emit less noise.

We have compiled this table to give you an idea of the loudness (in decibels) of familiar sounds, so you can get an idea of the level of noise we are talking about.

Common DeciBels Sounds

Power Requirements

How much power you need will determine what size generator you need. You can work out your power needs by finding out the wattage of the appliances you need to power. To determine the wattage, check your user manual, online, or even the appliance itself.

Here’s an indication of some average wattages of various appliances. Please bear in mind that these are indicators only. Your actual wattage will vary from brand to brand, so always check.

Recoil Start or Electric Start

Recoil start generators start by pulling a cord through a series of gears. Electric start generators have a key or push button that starts the engine. Recoil start generators are sometimes less expensive than electric starters. Electric start generators are easier to start and generally more expensive. And those recoils can sometimes jam and cause difficulties.

Runtime

No one wants to continuously be refilling their generator with fuel. It is arduous, boring, and you will be without power while you let the generator cool.

Most portable generators will have a runtime of 8 to 10 hours on a full tank of gas. If you need longer, you may need to buy a generator with a larger tank.

Remember, the runtime is dependent on the load. The more appliances you are running, the shorter the runtime will be. If you are only running a few small appliances, you may be able to get by with a smaller generator. In this case, it will still last long enough to give you more than eight hours, even if it is only small.

Capacity

When you buy a generator be mindful of the size and capacity of the fuel tank. They can range from around a gallon on the smaller end of the spectrum to over 8 gallons on the high end. The fuel tank size determines how long your generator can run while powering comparable appliances. A larger tank is better for extended use and a smaller tank is better for portability. It is a balancing act between tank size and portability.

Build Qualify

All the Firmans we looked at are sturdy and built to high standards. When you buy a generator it is best to consider the quality. You don’t want to buy something from an obscure manufacturer and have the thing fall apart on you. We recommend only buying from a reputable manufacturer. You should also research the product that you are considering by taking a quick look at the user reviews. This can satisfy you that the generator well built and is the right one for you and your requirements.

Control Panel & Other Features

This is another generator feature that can vary between models. Some have only one basic output while others will have several ports with different uses. Usually, the more outlets it has, the more expensive it will be. There is no need to spend extra for an all-singing and all-dancing generator if you need only one output. Consider your requirements and make a decision.

Parallel capable

You can also increase the power of your generator by connecting two together. To do this, the generators need to be “parallel capable.” Some models do not have this feature, while others do. If you are planning on connecting two together, make sure that they are parallel capable. Some generators will have an outlet that is for connecting another generator. Some will come with a cord that will allow you to connect two generators together. You only need to do this if you need to power a lot of stuff. Instead of this, it is easier to buy a single generator that will accommodate your needs.

Frequency

You should also check the frequency of your generator. Portable generators will have an AC output with a certain frequency. If this frequency is too low, it can damage your appliances. Some generators have an output with a frequency of 60 Hz while others will have an output with a frequency of 50 Hz. The frequency is adjustable on some generators. If the frequency is not adjustable, check that the frequency is compatible with your appliances.

Warranty

When you buy a generator, make sure that you have a decent warranty. Generators are expensive and can be a sizable investment. You will want a warranty that will cover any faults that you might have. Some generators will have a warranty of 2 to 3 years whilst others will have a warranty of as many as 5 years. Firman generators go down the middle with a three-year warranty on their generators.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some frequently asked questions regarding Firman Generators and the company:

Are Firman Generators Any Good?

Firman is an established brand. It manufactures generators with a reputation for delivering reliable power. And all at a lower price than some other, more expensive, well-known brands. Not only that but they are made in the USA and supported by a two-year warranty.

Who Makes Firman Generators?

Firman is a leading global supplier of portable power. It has over a decade of manufacturing experience. And a stellar reputation in over a hundred countries as a dependable power source. Firman generators are a product of Sumec Machinery. Sumec Machinery, founded in 1978, now has its corporate headquarters in Nanjing, China. Atlanta, Georgia, serves as the company’s North American headquarters.

How Many Hours Can A Firman Generator Run?

The generator’s run time is determined by the number of appliances it is powering and what size generator you have.

Do You Need To Break In The Firman Generator?

You need to change the oil after the first 25 running hours. Here You can find a youtube video that explains it in more detail. And here is a section from the Firman Website about how to break in your generator

How Often Should I Change The Oil In My Firman Generator?

After the first change at 25 hours, Firman recommends an oil change after every 100 hours of use.

So, Are Firman Generators any Good

Firman P03607

All the generators above are great for different reasons. But for the best overall generator, I recommend the P03607. It is relatively low-cost and produces enough to supply most appliances in your home. The only real issue with the P03607 is the lack of wheels. but you can fix that by buying a wheel kit and installing it yourself.

Although the W03803 produces almost the same amount of power and has more features, the price is too high to be our No 1.

You can find all the generators we discussed on the Firman official website, where you can buy them. You can also find accessories there, like the wheel kit.
